Safety
Always collect water samples with a partner! Do not enter the water alone!
Always be careful when entering the water. Don’t go in farther than you’re comfortable and be mindful of the waves, currents, rocks, sea lions, etc.
Use water shoes to protect your feet from rocks, sea urchins, etc.

Protocol
- Pre-label whirl-top bag(s) for each water sample with sample location, ID, and date.
- Fill each bag with a fresh or marine water sample by submerging the bag 5-10 cm below the surface without disturbing sediment. Spin and twist the top to close.
- Take a photo of the bag(s) with your cell phone to record GPS coordinates.
Remember to use your cell phone to record your GPS coordinates! This will allow you to connect results with geospatial data. GPS coordinates are embedded in the photo and can be retrieved using the EXIF app. You may also find it helpful to include a sheet of paper in the photo that notes the location, sample number, etc.
- Store the water samples in the fridge until processed. Process samples within 12 hours of collection.
